Two Special Events Commemorating 9/11 Are in Baltimore This Week

The members of the Fire Department of New York who made the ultimate sacrifice in their efforts to save others on September 11, 2001 will be remembered and honored through two special events, Better Angels: The Firefighters of 9/11 and the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb, during Firehouse Expo, July 20 - 23 in Baltimore. Both events are sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).

Better Angels: The Firefighters of 9/11 is an inspirational exhibit that features individual monochromatic oil portraits of the fallen firefighters on 6" x4" charred blocks of wood. The name of each firefighter and his company are written below the portrait.

The exhibit was created by Dawn Siebel, a Colorado artist and former New York City resident. She began working on Better Angels in 2005 as a tribute to those 343 firefighters and as an expression of appreciation to all members of the fire service. In 2009, Siebel and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation forged a partnership to bring the exhibit to a broader audience of firefighters and the public.

With support from the Department of Justice, the exhibit has expanded to include information about the department's Public Safety Officers' Benefits Program (PSOB) providing support, scholarships and disability resources to the fire service community. Additionally, the names of all firefighters honored on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, MD are listed.

"We recognized that working together, we could achieve Dawn's goal of honoring those brave 343 from FDNY, as well as all members of the fire service, who willingly put their lives on the line to save another," said Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Following Firehouse Expo, the exhibit will travel to the International Association of Fire Chiefs conference in Atlanta, August 22 - 26. The NFFF and Siebel are working on plans for Better Angels to appear in New York City for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb will take place on Thursday, July 21 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at the Hilton Baltimore on Pratt Street. Participants will climb the stairwell multiple times for a total of 110 stories. This represents the number of floors in the Twin Towers. All firefighters will have the option to start in full turn-out gear, just as their fire service brothers did that morning, or wear their work uniforms or gym clothes.

All participants will receive a photo and badge of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th. A total of 343 individuals can participate in the event. Registration fees will be directed to the NFFF to assist the surviving families and coworkers of those firefighters. This climb is a preview of others that will occur around the country on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

"The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb is a tremendous way to honor those heroes by completing the symbolic climb that they could not finish," said Chief Siarnicki. "These climbs are also a way to let the families know the legacies of their loved ones are remembered by so many in the fire service."

Registration is available at Firehouse Expo. For more information about the 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb go to www.regonline.com/stairclimb11-fhbaltimore.
