One-time Death Benefit

The Line of Duty Compensation Act, effective June 23, 2009, provides a $25,000 one-time death benefit.

Workers' Compensation

Benefit for spouse or spouse and children is 66 2/3% of average weekly earnings, not to exceed 105% of the state average weekly wage. Two-year lump sum payable if spouse remarries; weekly benefits cease. Children are eligible until age 18 or longer if disabled and incapable of self-support, or age 22 if full-time student, or beyond age 23 if on active duty in the Armed Forces.

Funeral Benefit

A maximum burial allowance of $5,000.

Retirement/Pension Plan

Individual cities and municipalities are responsible for providing retirement and pension plans for firefighters, but these retirement plans are governed by Chapter 87 of the Missouri Revised Codes. Effective May 1, 2002, spouse is entitled to 70% of the pay then provided by law for the highest step in the range of salary for the next title or next rank above the member's range or title held at the time of death, plus ten percent of such compensation to or for the benefit of each unmarried dependent child of the deceased member who is under the age of eighteen.

Education Benefit - Children

Public Service Officer or Employee's Child Survivor Grant Program provides assistance for children under age 24 enrolled in a program leading to a certificate or an associate or baccalaureate degree at participating Missouri postsecondary schools. Does not apply to degree programs in theology or divinity. Must be a Missouri resident.

Maximum grant amount is the amount of tuition charged to a Missouri undergraduate enrolled full-time in the equivalent program at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Dependent stepchildren are also eligible for this benefit.

Non-profit organization of individuals and business leaders who provide support to families of emergency service personnel after a line-of-duty death. Within 24 hours following a death, the family receives a financial contribution from Shield 24-7 and a representative is assigned as a mentor. Usually within 2-3 weeks, the organization will meet with the family to discuss the family's financial situation.

Shield 24-7 has a presence in the following counties: Camden, Clark, Crawford, Franklin, Gasconade, Knox, Lewis, Macon, Maries, Miller, Osage, Perry, St. Francois, and St. Genevieve. It is working to expand statewide.
